Oncology Seminar

The Philippine Oncology Nurses Association, Inc. in cooperation with F.A.C.E.S. Foundation Inc., shall be holding a clinical update for the first time in Bacolod. The update is entitled "ABC's of Chemotherapy". It will be held on MAY 18, 2012 (Friday), from 7am-5pm, at Bar 21, Lacson Street, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.


In connection with this activity , we are inviting you to join us in this one whole day update in oncology, where we learn together and share insights on how we care for our cancer patients and their families undergoing chemotherapy. We invited speakers and officers of PONA to share their knowledge and expertise on chemotherapy.


The registration fee shall include a certificate, program schedule, personalized kit, snacks, and lunch.

Changes in the IRON or AOC fees

There will be some increases in the fees for the IRON program or also known as AOC in NSW. Last year, the IHNA in Victoria, already started to increase their fees from AUD 10,000 to AUD 11,000. As of the moment the La Trobe University, Deakin University both in Victoria, and the College of Nursing in NSW,  remained the same. Respectively their fees are AUD 9,900, AUD 10,000 and AUD 10,000.

However, some nursing schools in Australia that caters for the assessment of the overseas nurse in South Australia have the most expensive fees. Usually it ranges from AUD 12,000 up to AUD 16,000.

Some colleges, institutions and universities in Western Australia offers the bridging program for nurses but it is done either twice a year or once a year.

Endorsement vs Clinical Handover

Now, you wanted to be part of the Australian Nurses community, that is why you seek for registration.

For nurses from overseas, especially from USA, Philippines or any country that uses American standards of nursing practice. You should be aware that in Australia, they do not call the handing in or endorsing of patient from one staff nurse to another as endorsement.

In Australia they refer it to as the clinical handover. This is also the same with the endorsement and there is no difference at all, aside from the settings and each hospital may have their own policy on how to do the handover.

It is important not to be confused with these two words, for they meant the same but use or call in a different term.

Getting the ml/hr or cc/hr

ml in volume / time in hours = ml/hr

Example:

100 ml to run for 2 hours. How many ml per hour?

100ml / 2 hr = 50 ml/hr

Example 2:

100 ml to run for 30 minutes. What is the ml per hour?

100ml x 60 mins
____. ______
30 min. 1hr

100ml x 2/hr = 200 ml/hr

Simple drug calculations

For the tablets an volume:

Desired Dose / Stock on hand x vol = answer

Example:

The doctor ordered 100mg of aspirin to patient A. The available stock is 50 mg. how many tablet will you give?

Desired dose: 100mg
Available stock on hand: 50mg
Looking for: tablet

100mg/50mgx1 = 2 tablets

Continuing Professional Development

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the Continual Professional Development (CPD) requirements for Registered, Enrolled Nurses and Midwives from the 1st of July 2010. The CPD requirements are one component of the Continuing Competence Framework that the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council (ANMC) has developed to protect the public by ensuring base line competence requirements are met.

The CPD requirements are actually straight forward:

1. The nurse needs to reflect on their education requirements based on their role and develop a learning plan to meet those requirements.
2. The nurse is then required to undertake education that meets the education requirements identified in their plan.
3. "Nurses and midwives will participate in at least 20 hours (points) of CPD per year, with a minimum of 60 hours (points) every three years. Documentation of participation in CPD must be completed at least once each year." One hour of learning equals one CPD point.
4. The nurse is responsible to provide evidence of CPD activities, this "Documentation must provide details of any CPD activities, including dates, a brief description and hours (points) spent in each activity."
5. CPD activities may be self directed which includes education provided via the in service program of the nurses employer or may be individual nurses seeking information from journals etc.
6. CPD activities may be formal which includes programs provided by a number of professional organisations these programs do not have to be endorsed to provide education by an accrediting body.
7. "Participation in mandatory continuing education, such as Basic Life Support training or manual handling, should not be counted as CPD unless active learning of new knowledge or skills has taken place."
8. "Examples of Effective CPD Activities
   • Reflecting on feedback, keeping a practice journal
   • Acting as a preceptor/mentor/tutor
   • Participating on accreditation, audit or quality improvement committees
   • Undertaking supervised practice for skills development
   • Participating in clinical audits, critical incident monitoring, case reviews and clinical meetings
   • Participating in a professional reading and discussion group
   • Developing skills in IT, numeracy, communications, improving own performance, problem solving and working with others
   • Writing or reviewing educational materials, journal articles, books
   • Active membership of professional groups and committees
   • Reading professional journals or books
   • Writing for publication
   • Developing policy, protocols or guidelines
   • Working with a mentor to improve practice
   • Presenting at or attending workplace education, in service sessions or skills workshops
   • Undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate studies which are of relevance to the context of practice
   • Presenting at or attending conferences, lectures, seminars or professional meetings
   • Conducting or contributing to research
   • Undertaking relevant online or distance education"

It is not a complicated process - reflect on your requirements, seek education to address same, document attendance so that you have evidence of same.
 
Don't get confused by the large number of organisations who are identifying that they have courses specifically designed to provide CPD points - as you can see from the list of examples of CPD activities this is not required. 
 
Also be aware that the Royal College of Nursing allocates CNE points (Continuing Nurse Education) to conferences and education courses but these points are not required to be collected to achieve the ANMC requirements.
 

 

White Policy through English Test

Overseas nurses are currently facing this discriminatory act through English proficiency.

All over the world IELTS has become the major obstacles for all types of professionals that wanted to render their service in the other part of the world.

This issue is somehow neglected since many government agencies are unaware of this or maybe its a conspiracy theory. As claimed by the many.

However, English is important in the communication vetween two people and thus, fluency is important.

Nevertheless, the increasing cut off score for the acceptable score for the English proficiency is way too far.

IELTS as claimed is not intended to measure the capacity of an individual in their proficiency in English. But sad to say it is the practice.

One person is currently campaigning about how this English test kill other languages all over the world. Failed to ubderstand, most of the words used in English are borrowed words from different regions around the world.

Our world beeds diversity to learn feom one another. But this is not the case.

Some may claim that English is important than any ither languages. Then you need to think about it.
