AHPRA Eligibility Extension and Validity


Some of you out there might have a situation where you have an eligibility letter from AHPRA but you are not yet enrolled in any bridging course. At the same time, your eligibility letter is about to expire. 

Now, you already find a school or educational provider for your bridging program. However, the program will start a month after your eligibility will expire. What you will do?

Simple, stop stressing yourself about your registration. Since, once you are enrolled in your chosen education provider, your are now eligible to register after passing your bridging course. So, it does not matter anymore if you finished your course after your eligibility letter expires. What AHPRA requires you is to submit your identity check (if not done yet) and a letter of recommendation for registration directly from your educational provider.

BUT, what if the educational provider will not accept you for the course due to the reason that your eligibility letter will expire before the course will be completed. Here are the things that you need to do:

Either:

Email your case officer and ask for a statement from him or her stating that you can still be enrolled in the course for as long as before your eligibility letter expires you are already enrolled.Then forward it to the educational provider, since majority of the educational providers are unaware of this situation or was not elighten about this issue.

(Most likely you will get a response like this " You have one year to be enrolled in a bridging course, if you are enrolled by the expiry date this willl be taken into consideration.")
or

Explain to your educational provider that there is no any problem of enrolling you or accepting you in the program since your eligibility will expire a month or a week after while the program has already started. Nevertheless, if they wwill ask for any support of this statement, then forward the email from your case officer to the admission officer in your chosen school or course provider.

BUT:

There is some situation here that their or your eligibility letter is about to expire and you have not found any bridging school as of the moment that will enroll you. It is because that they are already full for the entire year or you though it was so easy to find a bridging course in Australia. 

With this situation you are required to contact your case officer directly. Do not be shy to contact them since they will be so happy to explain to you what are your options. It is better to give them a call,since majority of the case officer will provide their direct hotline number. 

Explain to them your situation and the reasons why you required to ask for an extension of your eligibility. However, most of the case officer will tell you that you need to re-apply again and repeat the entire process to gain that eligibility letter again. This will be frustrating side, but atleast you have tried. In some instance, your case officer will extend another month or a couple of months. This will be your luckiest day.

Health Insurance

Now you had been sponsored by your employer to apply for the working visa or permanent residency. This time you are required to have your own personal health insurance and as one of the requirement by the DIAC. I know that there are plenty of insurances in Australia that will provide you with a better cover for yourself or family (dependent). Meanwhile, try to look for an insurance that is way cheaper than the other one that have almost the same coverage with the expensive insurance company. At the same time, make sure that they can be used in the area where you will be staying while you are working.

Some of the insurance company that provides coverage for the overseas visitor for the 457 visa or permanent residency are the following. Please take note that there are many other health insurance but I will just list those that are affordable and reasonable at the same time. Also, their order in the list does not mean that the top list is the cheapest and the best. I will list it in any order.

Work Experience (Finding A job)

Yes, you are now a registered nurse in Australia, however you might have hard time looking for a job in a hospital to work as an RN. Yes, you have a work experience but, is it enough for the hospital to absorb you?

Majority of the hospitals in Australia requires nurses from overseas that recently gained their registration to have atleast 2 years of nursing experience. This 2 years and more experience should be in a specialized area. Like for instance, oncology, ICU, surgical, medical and others. If you happened to have a community nurse experience, then you might somehow have hard time looking for a position in a hospital. But, you should not lost your hope, since hospital is not the only option for you to work as a nurse. There are plenty nursing homes that are willing to sponsor overseas trained nurses with current registration from AHPRA. All you need to do is find one, like for example Bupa, Healthscope, Uniting care (soon) and many more. 

Meanwhile, if you are a nurse with a plenty of experience in any special then you can apply in any hospitals in Australia. But, make sure that they sponsor your for a working visa, unless you have already a permanent residency here in Australia. You can try applying in Ramsay, since they are known to be a very good employer for overseas nurses or maybe, you can go to the government owned hospital and apply. All you need to do is enquire and then you will find the answer.

Stroke – They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue


I just thought of sharing this article that was sent to me by a colleague through e-mail as this could be helpful to us nurses in saving lives.
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.. ..S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Ingrid’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this…

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently – i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE: Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out his tongue.. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Process in Submitting your Application to AHPRA (for RNs and ENs)


ƞ    Read the form carefully;
ƞ    Gather all the supporting documents;
ƞ    Request all the documents to be sent directly to AHPRA from its respective agency like PRC, IDP or British Council, School and others;
ƞ    Have your documents certified true copy. Never send an original copy unless specified by AHPRA, like that of your CV.
ƞ    Send the documents to AHPRA office (which ever office you prefer)
ƞ    Wait for an email from AHPRA or your case officer that the assessment has already commenced. At the same time, you will know that your papers will be assessed once they have started deducting the amount for assessment in your credit card or debit card.
ƞ    This will be waiting time game now. Be patient.

How to download your AHPRA certificate of Registration

This is only applicable for Registered Nurses who have their registration in Australia.

You are newly registered and wanted to have a copy of your AHPRA registration certificate. What you need is to have a user ID and a password and you can get this by calling AHPRA or contacting your case officer.

First go to the AHPRA website: www.ahpra.gov.au


Then click on your account which can be found on the right upper portion of your computer screen.



Click on sign in and you will be redirected to a page where it is asking for your user id, date of birth and password.



Then scroll down and click on download registration certificate.



You will then start download your certificate and you have a copy of your own certificate. It will be saved mostly on PDF format.

Certificate of Employment for AHPRA

AHPRA requiers RN from overseas to produce a copy of their certificate of employment. They will ask you to have you certificate with your employers logo, name, address and contact number if possible. In the content, there should be a statement stating ig you worked full-time, part-time or casual and for how many hours in a year, month or weeks.

Difference Between letter of offer to letter of enrolment

Now, you already have an eligibility letter from AHPRA, and you want to apply for the bridging course with out the aide of an agency, which is good,since you will not be spending a big amount of money to an agency. You are now proceeding for an application for your visa in the embassy. What you need is to gather all the required documents for your application. Majority of the applicants are confused by the letter of offer for embassy purpose only and from the letter of enrolment. Both can be used in an embassy, so you do not need to stress out about it. But how do they differ from each other?

The letter of an enrolment is a letter made for you by the institution confirming your place in the specified commencing date of the course that you paid. It means that you are enrolled already and your place for that course is already secured (simplest way to explain). However, the letter of support for visa, is a letter produced by an institution in support for your application in the embassy. This letter only contains the course that you will be taking and if how long it will take. Remember, this does not guarantee a place for your desired date of the course.

New English Language Skills Registration Standard from 19 September 2011

From AHPRA


A revised English language skills registration standard for nurses and midwives will be in place from
Monday 19 September 2011, after the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council (AHWMC) approved

the revised standard recommended by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (the Board or NMBA).

The new standard was developed through extensive consultation with the professions and the community,
which helped ensure it is fair, reasonable and guided by public safety.
The revised standard - also informed by the Board’s review of the available evidence and stakeholder
feedback - takes effect from 19 September 2011 and includes detailed transition provisions to smooth its
implementation.

The role of the Board is to protect the public. Under the National Law, the National Boards set registration
standards which all applicants must meet before they can be registered to practise in Australia.
Each of the 10 National Boards has set an English language skills registration standard to ensure all
registered health practitioners in Australia can provide safe care to the Australian community and can
communicate effectively – by listening, reading, in oral conversation and in writing – with their patients and
with other health professionals about the care of their patients. For detailed information about the NMBA
English language skills registration standard go to www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au

The revised NMBA English language skills registration standard:


  • still requires registered nurses, midwives and enrolled nurses to communicate effectively in English



  • brings the NMBA English language skills registration standard in line with the standard of the other 

National Boards, while retaining key profession specific features


  • means that applicants who have completed a minimum of five years (full-time equivalent) of 

combined secondary and/or vocational and/or tertiary education taught and assessed in English,
in:  Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the
United States of America are considered to have met the standard and therefore do not need to sit
an English language test. All other applicants are required to submit evidence of English
proficiency


  • recognises the different education requirements for each category of nursing. For registered nurses 

and registered midwives, two of these full-time equivalent five years required above must be a preregistration program of study taught and assessed in English in one of the countries listed above.
For enrolled nurses, one of these full-time equivalent five years must be a pre-registration program
of study taught and assessed in English in one of the countries listed aboveAustralian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency



  •  gives the Board flexibility to consider and/or grant an exemption to a defined group through the 

development of nationally-consistent policy, if in the future there is compelling evidence
demonstrating English language proficiency equivalent to the standard for a defined cohort


  •  is supported by detailed transition provisions for currently-enrolled students who are soon to 

complete their courses. For example, current students due to complete their course by the end of
2011 or who complete their outstanding course requirements by 30 March 2012 must either meet
the Board’s current (to 18 September 2011) requirements in relation to English language skills, or
they can opt to meet the Board’s new standard.

The revised NMBA English language skills registration standard does not change the requirement for
applicants who must submit evidence of proficiency in English through their English test results. This group
must still achieve a minimum of level 7 in one sitting in each of the four components – listening, reading,
writing and speaking - of the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or a B
score or above in one sitting in each of the four components of the Occupational English Test (OET).

To support the implementation of the new standard, the Board has determined a number of transition
provisions for students and applicants who have submitted their application to AHPRA which are detailed in
the Revised English language skills registration standard Fact Sheet and FAQs published on the NMBA
website. The Board is also working with nursing and midwifery professional organisations and education
providers, employers in the public and private sectors and Commonwealth, State and Territory government
departments to support the smooth introduction of the revised standard from 19 September 2011.

In determining the new standard the Board applied the following principles:

  •  protecting the public
  • national consistency and alignment, where possible, with the English language skills registration 
  • standards of the other National Health Profession Boards
  • recognising the differences in the educational preparation for nursing and midwifery and the two 
  • categories of nurse (enrolled and registered nurses)
  • the need for a rigorous registration standard 
  • the requirement for a standard that is clear and can be implemented effectively.

Congratulations You are now an AUS RN

Now, after finishing your bridging program anywhere in Australia, all you need to do is patiently wait for your registration number. I know some of you will be in front of the computer all day and kept on typing your last name in the AHPRA registers of practitioners to check if you are already registered. However, you do not have to do this, it is due to the fact that, once you have your registration number your case officer will contact  you by email with your registration number and user ID for AHPRA website log in.

Business Visa Subclass 456

Many bridging program in Australia requires their student to be under a business subclass 456. However, some university will require you to apply for a student visa.

The subclass 456 visa is the visa that is intended mostly for people who have to attend a business transaction in Australia. This does not mean that it involves financial transaction. At the same time, this visa is widely used by overseas nurse from the Philippines or other countries.

You can apply for this visa, if you already have a letter of offer for embassy from the educational provider for your bridging course. For more enquiries about this visa, directly go to the website of Australian embassy.

Once your visa is approved, you are allowed to stay in Australia for a maximum of three months. Eventhough that your visa will have a one year expiration, you are still required to exit the country on or before 90 days of stay. After which, you can return again and stay for another 3 months.

If after your bridging course, your registration number is not yet published in the registers of practitioners in AHPRA's website, then you can exit the country and then go back after a week or to what ever date you intend to come back.

The names of the hospitals and cities has been altered and does not exist in real world. This will only  be a guide for those internationally trained nurse who have difficulties in making a CV for AHPRA application.
